Behavioural Data Science in Education

Behavioural Data Science is an interdisciplinary field that combines the methods and techniques of computer science, statistics, psychology, economics, sociology, and business to model, understand, and predict human, algorithmic, and systems behaviour. The new field is shaping up, becoming more and more popular. As a result, the demand for Behavioural Data Science has been on the rise, and several universities globally are now offering courses in this field (primarily, at the Master's level).

Where can you study behavioural Data Science?

The University of Warwick offers a dedicated MSc program in Behavioural Data Science, which covers a wide range of psychology and computer science courses. The program is designed to provide students with a deep understanding of the theories and methods used in Behavioural Data Science and their application in real-world scenarios.

The University of Amsterdam also offers a Master's in Psychology with a strand in Behavioural Data Science, although the program seems to primarily cover behavioural analytics. The program does not cover algorithmic and systems behaviour but is focused on human behaviour. It aims to teach students how to use data to understand and predict human behaviour and provides training in data analysis, programming, and statistics. A Master's in Behavioural Data Science with similar human behaviour and "Big Data" focus is also offered by the Universitat de Barcelona.

In addition to these universities, the University of Western Australia also offers a minor in Behavioural Data Science. Unlike the above-mentioned Master's courses, this minor is designed for undergraduates and consists of four units designed to provide undergraduate students with introductory to intermediate skills in scientific measurement, survey, and test design, and data analysis with introductory to intermediate statistics. The final (capstone) unit teaches students how to apply their Behavioural Data Science skills in either an academic research context, an applied industry context, or an educational (teaching) context. The minor is open to both Arts and Science undergraduate students and allows students to gain valuable skills in data analysis, problem-solving, and data collection tools. Overall, the program is more of a program in social psychology with comprehensive quantitative methods. Yet, it may be of interest to students, who want to learn the basic skills necessary to take a more comprehensive course in Behavioural Data Science elsewhere.

The list of available Behavioural Data Science programs is constantly updating. If you are aware of a relevant course, which is not mentioned in this blog post, get in touch with us through the contact form. The demand for professionals with expertise in Behavioural Data Science is on the rise, and these programs provide an excellent opportunity for students to gain valuable skills in this rapidly growing field.
